Great music. Good friends. And, a noble cause.
That sums up this special event in my home town at the beautiful Porter Center on the Brevard College campus.
On Friday, April 12th, local singer-songwriter, Shannon Whitworth, teamed up with her husband, Woody Platt (formerly of the Steep Canyon Rangers), to raise money for the Mountain Sun Community School in my hometown of Brevard, North Carolina.
The event brought together a wonderful collection of some of the area's top bluegrass / Americana musicians, with guest appearances by a trio of "dads" from the school, and an inspiring ensemble of eight ukulele strummers known as the Ukuladies.
The event was well-attended, raising thousands of dollars for the school, while treating a theater full of local music fans (and a couple of photographers -- also music fans!) to two solid sets of bluegrass and Americana bliss.
I've done a lot of photography work with the Steep Canyon Rangers in the past, but this was my first time working with Woody since he departed from the band a couple of years ago. Woops, scratch that. A few years back, I did a photo shoot with Woody for a story about fly fishing for No Depression magazine. For that photo shoot, guitars and banjos were traded in for a couple of fly rods and a few rainbow trout.
On a personal note, I feel blessed to be able to work with people like Woody and Shannon, two talented artists as well as genuine and generous people. Their efforts to support the community with this event, and with the annual Mountain Song Festival (also in Brevard) is testament to their dedication to giving back to the community. Kudos to them and to everyone on the Porter Center stage and behind the scenes for delivering such beautiful music in an equally beautiful venue.
